From Broker to Bench: How Colette Safford Turned a Second Career into Judicial Success
Many believe entering the legal field needs to be a linear path: get your undergraduate degree, go directly to law school, graduate, and then become a lawyer. But for Will County Circuit Court Judge and UIC Law alumna Colette Safford, taking a non-traditional route proved to be a greater advantage.
A seasoned real estate broker, Safford pursued law as a second career, enrolling in UIC Law’s Part-Time Evening Program in 2009 after an 11-year gap following her undergraduate studies. Entering law school with more than a decade of professional and life experience, her skills in negotiation, decision-making, and client service gave her an edge in the classroom and later, in practice.
“Second career and older students bring value,” Safford stated. “All of your skills are transferable to the practice of law, and it’s never too late to enter this profession and excel.”
Following her graduation in 2014, Safford served as assistant public defender in Will County’s Juvenile Division, associate at O’Dekirk, Allred & Associates, attorney for the Will County Executive’s Office and Deputy Liquor Commissioner, and founder of her own practice, Safford Law, LLC.
Each position expanded her leadership experience, deepened her community connections, and built on the transferable skills she carried with her from her first career. Layering all her experiences with perspective ultimately prepared her to serve as a judge. In November 2024, Safford was elected as a Circuit Court Judge for Will County and now serves as presiding judge of the Misdemeanor Division.
For current students, Safford emphasizes the importance of balancing academics with hands-on training. She encourages pursuing clerkships, law firm experience, and opportunities under a 711 license.
“Even if you don’t plan to be a trial attorney, the experience builds confidence, networks, and practical skills you carry with you forever,” she emphasized.
Safford credits UIC Law with preparing her to be “practice ready” through its emphasis on hands-on training. Her journey demonstrates that there is no single blueprint for success in law. With persistence, practical experience, and commitment to service, she has shown how a non-traditional path can lead to remarkable impact.
