UIC Law Alumnus Establishes Districtwide Law Pipeline Program
UIC Law alumnus Louis J. Wool (JD ’92) has played a central role in expanding legal education opportunities for high school students, helping create a districtwide law pathway program now adopted across Illinois School District 214.
The program, which began as an introductory American Law course Wool developed at Wheeling High School, grew into a four-course sequence that introduces students to the legal system: criminal and civil law, constitutional law, and legal research and argument. Students participate in mock trials, appellate simulations, case briefings, research projects, and may complete internship or paid apprenticeship experiences in law-related fields. The final course, offered in partnership with Eastern Illinois University, provides dual high school and college credit. Many of Wool’s former students have gone on to become attorneys, paralegals, police officers, probation officers, legal assistants, and other justice-system professionals.
Throughout his teaching career, Wool earned numerous distinctions, including multiple Outstanding Contribution in Education awards from District 214, Walmart Teacher of the Year, Most Inspirational Teacher honors, and in 2024, the Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel Teacher of the Year Award.
Prior to teaching, Wool served as a trial attorney in the Chicago Transit Authority’s law department, representing bus and train operators in civil injury cases. In that role, he handled trials, depositions, motions, arbitrations, and client work; experience that later informed his approach to instruction.
Wool’s decision to move from law to education was influenced by longstanding interests in both professions. While in law school, he completed teacher education coursework, student teaching, and coached high school basketball. He eventually transitioned to the classroom, teaching social studies, history, and law at Evanston Township High School and later at Wheeling High School, where he spent most of his career. He attributes much of his professional foundation to UIC Law.
“UIC Law combined academic rigor with a real-world, pragmatic approach,” Wool stated. “I am truly grateful for the education and experiences I received.”
Now retired from full-time teaching, Wool has returned to Wheeling High School as a teacher’s aide supporting students within the special education department, continuing his commitment to student development and civic learning.
